Newborn Essential Checklist: All You Need For A Smooth Baby Arrival In Singapore

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Preparing for the arrival of a new baby can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially if it's your first time.

To help you get ready, we've put together a newborn checklist with all the essentials you need for the smooth arrival of your baby in Singapore.

Baby Clothing Checklist

Having enough clothes for your little one is essential—you don't want to be doing laundry every other day! Newborns should have at least:

  • 8-10 long sleeved pyjamas
  • 6-8 onesies
  • 4 pairs of scratch mittens as well as socks or booties
  • 3-4 muslin swaddle cloth
  • 2 hats (optional)
  • 1-2 sleepsacks

Try to also buy newborn clothes that snap or zip shut for easy diaper changes. They can be easily found online or in baby stores around Singapore.

Diapering And Changing Supplies

As a new parent, you may not fully comprehend the number of diaper changes a newborn baby goes through in a day. Daddies and mummies definitely don’t want to be caught unprepared in those times of need.

Be sure to prepare all these diapering and changing items on our checklist:

  • 2-3 packets of cloth or disposable diapers (don’t need to stock up too many at the start as babies tend to outgrow the Newborn size very quickly)
  • 2-3 waterproof changing pad
  • 2 tubes of diaper cream
  • 10 packet of disposable wet wipes (not to underestimate the amount of wet wipes you will be using!)
  • 1 diaper bag
  • 1 changing station for home (good to have)

Feeding Essentials

Whether you formula feed, breastfeed, or do both, there are newborn supplies you'll need on hand for mealtime. Both breastfeeding and bottlefeeding mamas will need to tick these items off their checklist:

  • 12 handkerchiefs
  • 3 burp cloths
  • 1 nursing pillow (good to have)
  • 1 rocking chair for feeding (good to have)
  • 1 steriliser (UV or steam steriliser)
  • 1 bottle brush
  • 3 milk bottles

Get these essential items ready if you’re planning to formula feed:

  • 2-3 milk powder containers
  • 1 tub of baby formula
  • 1 insulated flask

If you’re latching, you won't need any equipment, but some nursing mothers like to have:

  • 5-10 packs of milk storage bags
  • 1 insulated thermal bag for storing frozen breastmilk
  • 7 pairs of nursing bras
  • 1-2 packs of breast pads
  • 2 tubes of lotion for sore nipples
  • 1 electric breast pump
  • 1 nursing covers
  • 1 pair of nipple shields for easier latching
  • 1 manual breast pump (good to have)

Bathing Supplies

Bath time for babies can be a delightful bonding experience as parents and their newborns share giggles and laughter in a tub of warm water. For a splashing good bath time, you will need keep these checklist items on standby:

  • 3-4 soft-hooded towels
  • 1 tube of baby soap and shampoo (tip: Get free samples to try on baby before bulk buying as their skin tends to be more sensitive)
  • 1 tube of baby lotion
  • 2-3 washcloths
  • 1 infant tub
  • 1 pack of cotton buds for umbilical cord care

Nursery Equipment

When it comes to setting up your newborn baby’s nursery, there are several essential checklist items that will help get you started:

  • 1 crib with a firm mattress, fitted sheets, and waterproof mattress cover
  • 1 cosleeper (if needed)
  • 1 night light
  • 1 baby nail clippers
  • 2 pacifiers
  • 1 first-aid kit with thermometer and syringe
  • 1 baby monitor (good to have)
  • 1 play mat for tummy time (good to have)
  • Baby toys like rattles, mobiles, and teethers (if needed)

Outdoor Items

An outdoor outing with a baby can open up a world of activities, sunshine, and fun! To ensure your adventure is enjoyable and comfortable, there are a few useful essentials to consider bringing:

  • 1 baby carrier or sling (good to have)
  • 1 stroller with newborn recline (there is a wide variety of options available, consider the long term usage of the product)
  • 1 sunshade for car windows (if needed)
  • 1 car seat (if you’re driving the baby home from the hospital, it’s mandated by Singapore traffic law for the baby to be seated in the car seat!)
